Did some rearranging of the pictures hanging on the walls ... just need a picture of Wesley David now to have 8 generations of Noble descendants hanging over my desk. As usual, Ricky holds place of honor.
Missing him today;
NEVER FORGOTTEN;
Gone, but not forgotten
Never forgotten
Where's the sunny smile
The giggles of delight
I look up
The mischievous grin hangs
Above my desk
The giggles hover
Out of reach
Remembered
But not heard
Never forgotten

Ramblings
Time to get some feelings down again .... I guess. Been a long time since I've been here. It's so easy to put blogging off.
Got a call from Janet yesterday ... and ... yeppers, there goes my BP through the roof again. Still not down where is should be yet, but it's getting there.
Mom is sinking further into her own world. I still feel guilty for not being there for her. She did refuse my help last year, in fact, was very vehement about NOT wanting me there. That felt like the proverbial punch in the gut. No matter how many times I tell myself that I've done what I could, the guilt feelings keep coming back. However, the way Gran raised me, a promise is meant to be kept, good or bad and I DID promise her that I wouldn't let her go into a Care Home and there she is ... in Cassell Holme ... so sad. This is when I need my superman powers to kick in so I could fly there and see her and turn around and fly to Alberta to be with Robin.
Can't believe that I'm going to be a GREAT grandmother ... still don't feel old enough to be a grandmom ... but .... then I look in the mirror and ... sure enough ... there's Gran looking back at me. Last summer Aunt Eileen and
I were talking about our ages and she feels the same way ... cannot understand how she could possibly be in her 80's ... makes me want to shake these young people who are wishing their lives away, wanting to grow up so fast. I just want to scream at them .... grab onto every minute ... live it ... love it ... make many memories and to hell with the mistakes ... look at the mistakes and learn from them and go on from there ... LIVE your life so that when you do get old (and you will) there will be no regrets ... no 'Wish I had done that when I had the chance to'
Speaking of regrets ... not too many here ... I did manage to 'carpe diem' as often as I could .. I DO wish I had gotten my motorcycle license and taken that trip up the Alaska Highway ... been there twice now and love it, but still firmly believe that the best way to see everything would be on a bike. Oh well .. arthritis has come to live with me, so this will never happen and I do treasure the trips that I have made ... so not much regret here, just a tiny 'If only' ... and I do have all those great pictures and even better memories. Sometimes I feel that, in another life, I lived in the Yukon ... how else could it have felt like I was going home every time I was there?
Well enough of this ... Why does this always seem like a school assignment and that someone is going to grade it and mark all my grammar, spelling and punctuation mistakes with a big red circle???

Confuddled
Not sure how to start this one. Many mixed feelings today ... time to start writing to try to sort this all out... My dear friend Jo just lost a grandson today ... poor wee JJ didn't have a chance .. he was born with downs syndrome and had many respiratory problems ... the wee fellow fought hard, but still couldn't make it to his first Christmas. Another angel to watch over us, just sent for a short time to teach us what love is? ... or did he have another purpose that we haven't discovered yet.
This all brings back so many sad memories and so very much pain. I can't get my head wrapped around it ... I can't figure out how I feel. I never got to meet JJ, but I love his Mum and his Grandma and any child is so very precious to me, the feelings are there but won't sort themselves out. I cry a bit for a lost baby, then, I wonder if he's really better off since he had so many health problems and not much chance to ever lead a full life ... but what is a 'full life' ... isn't any life to be treasured and the loss of it mourned.
So, rest in peace, sweet, innocent JJ. I'm sorry I never got to know you, but I will still mourn for you and trust you are happy and free from pain and sorrow now.....

Remembering
Today is always a sad day for me. Today my wee angel, Ricky would have been 31 years old. All he had ever wanted to do was go to school all day and to be six. He didn't have the chance to accomplish either. Damned cancer took away that chance .. took away all hopes and dreams ... cut short what had the promise of being an outstanding adventure. A sweet, bright, curious young lad lost in six too short months. Oh, he fought ... hard ... after two months of tests ... never ending tests .. the doctors gave him two to three weeks ... WEEKS, my God ... he fought for another four months before the monster in his brain won. Now, twenty-six years later, I sit and cry instead of celebrating another year in his life. I still miss him. I still hear his voice and infectious laugh. I still see his snapping black eyes ... yes they were such a dark brown that they were black ... and always sparkling - with laughter - with mischief - with curiosity -and yes, even sometimes with anger. How could he not have a temper - an Irishwoman for a Mum and a French/Metis for a father - Oh yes a temper, for sure. Luckily, it was mostly an Irish temper ... blow your stack ... rant and rave ... then the storm is over and the sun comes out ... a big hug and "Mummy, can we be friends again?"
What more can I say ... I miss you my Sonny Bunny....
MY SONNY BUNNY
A DIMPLED CHEEK
MISCHIEVOUS BLACK EYES
PUDGY HANDS AND STURDY LEGS
QUICK MIND, ALWAYS QUESTIONING;
WHY IS THE SKY BLUE?
HOW DO PLANES FLY?
WHY DON'T PUPPIES TALK?
IS IT MY TURN NOW?
CAN I DO THAT? WHEN?
CAN I HAVE A HUG?
DO YOU LOVE ME LOTS?
OH YES, MY SWEET PRINCE
MORE THAN I COULD EVER SAY
OH, FOR ONE MORE CHANCE
ONE MORE HUG
ONE MORE "I LOVE YOU MOMMY"
JUST ONE MORE......

Cleaning Closets
Cleaning closets ... getting rid of the old stuff to make way for new ... not just a physical clothes closet, but the mind too.
I recently came to the decision to get rid of some of my old collections ... tins, cookbooks, dishes, etc. Of course it's a tedious job deciding just what I can bear to part with and what I HAVE to keep. Sorting cookbooks is a mindless task and leaves lots of time for contemplation. I started to think about my obsession for cookbooks. I don't use recipes for my cooking, but I dive into a new cookbook the same way I do with a new novel. I was raised by my Granny, a wonderful lady who had lived through WWI, the depression, rationing and WWII. This is who taught me to cook ... everything by feel, look and pinch of this and a dash of that ... oh and that would taste good in here too. Rationing had taught her to use substitutes for most everything and the happy days spent by her side in that big old kitchen taught me that a recipe is only a guideline and a cookbook is a depository of suggestions. To this day I have trouble sticking to a recipe ... that much salt isn't necessary and that's way too much baking soda ... honey is better than sugar ... etc ... etc ... AND most importantly parsley is MUCH better than cilantro ...
On vacation, other people buy spoons, t-shirts or whatever their hobby happens to be for souvenirs. I search the shops for a local cookbook ... you know the kind that some organization puts out ... all their members submit their best/favorite recipe and the result is sold to fund-raise for that organization. I LOVE those the most. But, still, I can never follow that tried and true recipe, I have to add my own touch to it ... OCD - control issues - who knows? The results are always tasty though.
Looking through the many cookbooks that I own brought back many memories of where I got them ... who the people were that had submitted the recipes (yes, I do know some of them - old friends from Thompson ... even had a couple of my own faves included in one of them) Yes, my mind does tend to go off in strange directions when not occupied.
Now that my house isn't full of teenagers and I'm not working at a job that requires entertaining and there's just Vern and I, I do not spend as much time in the kitchen. Vern's away all week and I can happily survive on toasted tomato sandwiches and/or soup all week. So the BIG decision ... find my babies a new home and make some shelf space (much needed).
Then the next tangent; not only do physical things need to be cleared out, but so does the mind. There are many old hurts, resentments and anger that needs to be let go. Why do we need to hang on to old slights (sometimes imagined, I'm sure) Yes, they did hurt at the time. Acknowledge this, examine it and let it go ... it IS the past and life IS too short to dwell on the negative. Easy to say, easy to understand, but, not the easiest thing to really do. I find that some of the old hurts, no matter how many times I examine them, are not easy to let go. Maybe, now that I'm cleaning and sorting and letting some of the physical possessions go, just maybe, I'll be able to let some of the excess mental baggage take wings too ...... we'll see.

and here's the Xmas assignment;
XMAS SHOPPING
BUS DOORS HISS AND SQUEAK
SNOWFLAKES DRIFT AND CRUNCH
A RED-STUFFED SANTA RINGS HIS BELL
REVOLVING DOOR JAMMED WITH PEOPLE
PARCELS CRUSHED AND KIDS HOWLING
BLINKING XMAS TREE - CASH REGISTERS CLANGING
RED POINSETTIAS, GREEN PINE BOUGHS
15 MINUTE SPECIAL, CROWDS STAMPEDING
PUSHING, SHOVING, JABBING, SWEATING
THAT ONE'S MINE - NO - SHE GOT IT
FINALLY, THE PERFECT GIFT - NOW TO PAY
MORE LONG LINES - OUCH MY TOE
AT LAST - FINISHED - WHERE'S THE EXIT
OH NO - WHERE'S THE CARD - WHERE'S THE PAPER
ANOTHER LINE, ANOTHER HASSLE, ANOTHER BILL
MY NERVES ARE FRAZZLED, MY CLOTHES TOO WARM
MY EYES ARE BLURRY, MY HEAD'S IN A SPIN
NOW FOR THE EXIT - GET OUT OF MY WAY
FRESH CRISP AIR, EVENING'S CURTAIN HAS FALLEN
LOOK AT THE LIGHTS - OH, HOW PRETTY

SMALL TOWN
And yet another class assignment;
SMALL TOWN
First - green town sign
One Kilometer to go
Then - Corporate town sign
Upside down, bullet riddled
Next - a small church
Stark and white
Against brown, dry grass
And tall dark trees
Now - Main Street, town centre
A little boy with knees bare
Kicks a can and whistles
Through the vacant lot
General store - cracked gray paint
A lone man, a pick-up truck
Unloading boxes, Dust blowing
A sign creaks in the wind
An abandoned car sits rusting
Next to the empty pumps
The gas station - windows boarded
Faded sign says "CLOSED"
Dark dusty houses hide
Behind thick hedges
Past the crumbling curling rink
An old man shuffles
The noon siren shrieks
Startled
A shaggy black dog
Howls

MY SONG
One of my poems for class;
MY SONG
I SING OF EATING BUTTERED POPCORN
WATCHING PUPPIES PLAYING ON
FRESH MOWN GRASS AND A CHILD
LAUGHING, JUMPING ON A TRAMPOLINE
I SING OF HOT CHOCOLATE AND A GENTLE HUG
SOOTHING MUSIC DRIFTING OVER CALM WATER
REFLECTING MOONLIGHT
CEDAR BURNING IN THE FIREPLACE
I SING OF A LONG LUXURIOUS STRETCH
AND A DEEP SATISFYING YAWN
EATING CHOCOLATE CAKE AND
SMELLING THE FRESH BREAD BAKING
BUT MOSTLY I SING OF A MOUNTAIN SPRING
WATER RUNNING THROUGH A FIELD OF FLOWERS
BELLS RINGING ON THE STILL AIR AS
AN EAGLE SOARS OVER THE CEDAR FOREST

MY PUPPIES
This was written in memory of Jezabel and Muffin. We lost them both the same summer;
MY PUPPIES
BLACK AND WHITE; DAY AND NIGHT
PURE LOVE ON FOUR PAWS; EVERLASTING PUPPY JOY
ALWAYS GLAD TO SEE ME; ALWAYS SAD TO LEAVE ME;
ASKING ONLY LOVE; GIVING EVEN MORE
WHERE’S YOUR BALL? WANT SOME POPCORN?
THOSE WORDS MADE YOUR WORLDS ALRIGHT;
YOUR JOY MADE MY WORLD SEEM BRIGHT;
JEZ, MY FIERCE PROTECTOR;
I WISH FOR YOU A FENCELESS FIELD AND ANGELS TO
PLAY FETCH WITH:
MUFFIN, MY LITTLE GIRL;
MAY YOU HAVE ENDLESS POPCORN AND CHERUB
ARMS TO CUDDLE YOU:
MY WORLD IS A LITTLE MORE EMPTY NOW,
BUT YOU ARE EVER SAFE WITHIN MY HEART.
MY HEART IS MADE HEAVY BY YOUR PASSING,
MY LIFE IS MUCH RICHER BECAUSE YOU WERE HERE.

MY BEST FRIEND
I wrote this for my best friend, Jo;
MY BEST FRIEND
I have a friend with hair of gold.
Around her I’ll never feel old.
A cup of coffee you’ll always find;
Words of encouragement, always kind’;
An easy smile to brighten your day;
For all this you won’t have to pay!
Children hold a precious part
Of her great and generous heart.
Make them happy, watch her laugh;
Make them sad, she’s on the war path.
Kids bring out her inner child;
The game is on, gentle or wild.
If a joke you play, humour she doesn’t lack.
But revenge is sweet so watch your back.
To pull a prank, she’s first in line;
The only rule - would they? - then fine!
Scare her, a jig she’ll do,
And maybe make a puddle too
The ways of life aren’t always kind;
The road is rough with many a wind;
New experiences at every turn;
For a friend I always yearn;
Around one bend, skies were blue;
My life is richer, I met YOU!

MY SONNY BUNNY
This was written in memory of my precious son, Ricky.
MY SONNY BUNNY
A DIMPLED CHEEK
MISCHIEVOUS BLACK EYES
PUDGY HANDS AND STURDY LEGS
QUICK MIND, ALWAYS QUESTIONING;
WHY IS THE SKY BLUE?
HOW DO PLANES FLY?
WHY DON'T PUPPIES TALK?
IS IT MY TURN NOW?
CAN I DO THAT? WHEN?
CAN I HAVE A HUG?
DO YOU LOVE ME LOTS?
OH YES, MY SWEET PRINCE
MORE THAN I COULD EVER SAY
OH, FOR ONE MORE CHANCE
ONE MORE HUG
ONE MORE "I LOVE YOU MOMMY"
JUST ONE MORE......

Frustration with the phone company - rant
This is what happens when the phone company keeps me on hold for over an hour when I need their help;
CAN be sung to the tune of Otis Redding's Dock of the Bay
Waitin' on the telephone line
I've been waitin' for far too long
Waitin' for those answers
And my mind goes wanderin' away
I'm sittin' on hold for far too long
Still hearin' their bad muzak
Still waitin' for you to answer
Wastin' my time
~~~~~
'All lines are still busy
Please continue to hold
Your call is important'
If my call is SO important
Why am I waitin' on this ole phone line
Still hearin' your bad muzak
Still waitin' for you to answer
Wastin' my time
~~~~~~~~~
If my call's so important
Why can't someone just talk to me this time
You're the phone company for God's sake
What's wrong with your service, it's so bad
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Why are we payin' you so much
'Cause we need our phone line
To call our friends and connect
So I pay, so I can sit waitin' on hold
Listenin' to your bad muzak
Still waitin' for you to answer
Wastin' my time
Today I was reading one of Kimby's friend's blogs, Polyblogamus. He had an article about a memorial to the people who had died aboard the prison ships in New York harbour during the American Revolution. I do lots of reading about this war since our family was involved on both sides, patriot and loyalist. We are directly descended from Loyalists and so know more of this side of the story.
There were so many atrocities committed by both sides in this conflict that it boggles my poor mind. The fellow who posted his article has given me some of the easiest to understand information about this one that I have read to date.
I do need to thank Kimby for putting me in touch with these wonderful people.
Well here goes .... going to try this method instead of the old tried and true pen and paper to write out my feelings .... work on keeping myself sane by expressing myself and working it out in my head ... but some place where I can check back and try to figure out why I'm feeling so shitty.
I have always been blessed with great hearing. After the last 3 weeks, I realize that I never really appreciated just what a blessing this has been. Severe ear infection with major hearing loss has rendered me almost totally deaf. The Dr assures me that this is only temporary. I can only say that i am terrified that it may not happen. The meds are taking away most of the pain and some of the other symptoms, but I still CAN'T hear!!!!!
I don't think it's depression, but I do really prefer to be alone right now. I believe that this is because it's so damn frustrating not to be able to hear what people are trying to tell me. It's easier not to say 'Pardon?' and 'Excuse me?' 20 million times a conversation. I can see the frustration on their faces ...... Oh my God ...... did I look like that when someone had to ask me more than once to repeat something. The frustration .... the impatience.....
I'm NOT ready to be deaf!!!!!!! There are still too many things I want to hear.
I haven't heard Leland call me Gramma yet --- I NEED to hear my Mom tell me she loves me one more time and call me 'Sweetie.'
I got a beautiful gift yesterday, from my precious Uncle Glenn; a beautiful wooden bowl filled with a dozen wooden eggs, that he had turned on his lathe for me -- a late birthday gift --- doubly precious --- he made this for ME and birthday gifts are few and far between from him ... that's just his way.
After a good sniffle ... I reacted naturally and made a grab for the phone - needed to call my favorite person and thank him and tell him how much I love and miss him. He's 84, his voice is very soft - when my ears were normal (for me) I still had to listen carefully to catch every precious word. I had had a very frustrating conversation with a telemarketer the day before - I just could NOT face that with Uncle Glenn--- I settled for sending an email -- to his sister (Aunt Eileen) who lives next door and asking her to let him know that the parcel had arrived and to give him my heartfelt thanks and my love and a huge hug. I had to give her an excuse - so I watered down the facts somewhat - I don't want them to worry -- what good would that do ---- they're 2 thousand miles away.
So here I sit, in front of my 'puter - no pen and paper this time - trying a new way of writing out all my frustrations ---AGAIN.
How the hell do deaf people manage???? I know they do very well -- now I appreciate them and their troubles even more and they have my profound admiration.
To never hear a bird chirp - a loon call - a coyote howl - playing children shriek and laugh -
To never hear your baby's first cry - first word - call you Mommy - tell you he loves you
What could be more precious than that?
To hear someone say "I love you." To hear the ones you love laughing and talking -- so precious.
I've heard all these things ---- but
DAMN IT I WANT TO HEAR IT AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!
